If you live or work in South Austin around the Wm. Cannon and I-35 area and you are looking for a place to grab a meal without fighting the crowds, look no further than Tucci’s South Side Subs. Tucci’s Southside Subs is located in the strip center on the corner of I-35 and Wm. Cannon, between the dentist and the pizza place. It can be hard to see and notice but it was worth finding. They have a great variety of meats, cheeses, toppings and dressings, with names like Gramma Max’s Hot Ham and Swiss or Grilled Eggplant or Portabella Mushroom. They offer both, a cold sub or toasted sandwich. I can’t remember the name of what I ordered but it was delicious. There was chicken, turkey, at least two types of cheese, some wonderful banana peppers and just a touch of hot, sweet cherry peppers. It was all toasted together on a Kaiser roll. Yummm. Their prices are reasonable and the service was good. They are a local and independent business with two locations, this one on I-35 and another in Oak Hill at Hwy. 71 and 290. They also have a catering service offering sack lunches and sub trays. South Side Subs is great little sandwich shop offers a tasty meal without all of the hustle and bustle of busier areas of South Austin. South Austin has quite a few fun and eclectic restaurants and other eateries, South Side Subs is a great addition.

 Clearing brush at Armadillo Park If you live in the Austin area, you will find that there is no shortage of parks. Even if it is just a little strip of land in between apartments complexes you will always find green space that is available for public use. There are popular areas like Zilker Park, Pease Park and City Park and then there are the little neighborhood parks that sometimes get forgotten and overgrown. Armadillo Park located in South Austin, off Cooper and Wm. Cannon has been just such a park, until now. Thanks to the neighbors it seems area residents have gotten together with the city to review what needs to be done to make this stretch of property a scenic and inviting park for everyone to use. There are plans for a trail, benches and other site furnishings for neighbors to enjoy. The city is having non-native plants, dead trees and bushes removed to encourage the growth of indigenous plants and trees in the park area. There are concerns about a road closure, sidewalks and lighting but the city staff has plans to meet with citizens after a review of the park. There will be a notice sent out with the date and time for anyone who would like to hear about the Armadillo Park Project in person. South Austin has many great neighborhoods, where residents know each other and work together to maintain their quality of life and improve their communities. Casa Morenos has to be one of my favorite places in Southeast Austin to get a breakfast taco that is worth the $2-3 dollars you pay for it. These are not your typical pre-made tortillas with a little bit of egg and a bit of meat that you will get from many places. I ordered 2 bacon, egg, potato and cheese and they were delicious. I think they use 1/2 a potato, a whole slice of bacon in each one and wrap it in a fresh made tortilla. I ate 3/4 of the 1st one and had to stop because I was full, this is rare, I gave the second one to a coworker who also had trouble finishing it. Casa Morenos also offers a lunch buffet that includes enchiladas and tacos or you can order off of their menu. The pricing and portion sizes are good for lunchtime and the food is prepared pretty quick as well. Look for Casa Morenos on Burleson Road close to the post office. El Meson has been on Burleson Rd. for quite a few years now. It has had a steady growth and now stays quite busy. This is not your typical Tex-Mex but has more of an interior Mexico style and flavor. The food here has a little more “kick” than most places. The breakfast tacos while small are wonderful. I personally like to order the fajitas when they are on their daily lunch special. Great price and they taste sooo good, with enough meat to split with a friend if you like. They make the tortillas there, which is always a plus. You can see them pressing the little tortilla balls behind the counter as you place your order. Everything is made to order so you know it is going to be fresh. Makes your mouth water doesn’t it? Try El Meson in Southeast Austin, located just past the light on Burleson Road, if you are looking for something a little different. Belladonna is a small shop tucked away in a warehouse district in Southeast Austin. The location makes this little shop hard to find, but if you work around Burleson Rd. or are driving there, look near the Post Office at lunch time on a weekday and you see lots of cars, you have found the place. These guys provide tasty sandwiches, hot or cold, for a great price. You can get almost any combo deal, sandwich, chips and a drink for about $6 bucks. Oh and these are not your basic sub sandwiches. The Muffaletta has a tasty olive spread and is piled high with just the right amount of meat. For something a bit healthier, try one of their wraps or a BLT on wheat with avacado. By the way, they also have burgers. My favorite is the Bacon, Avacado, Cheeseburger, yummy! You can call in your order for pick-up or just go in and eat. Be warned, Belladonna gets busy at lunchtime during the workweek. Everything is made to order so make sure you allow at least 10-15 minutes to order. Belladonna Italian Subs is only one of many wonderful little restaurants tucked away in this area of Southeast Austin along Burleson Rd. Give them a try. You might be in for a tasty surprise. Once again I have received The Bastrop ISD Community Education Newsletter. I really look forward to seeing what new classes are being offered or which old favorites will be offered again. There are classes for beginners and a few for the experienced, ranging from technology, physical activities, creativity or just curiosity. The classes are offered at various Bastrop and Cedar Creek schools so that everyone can take advantage of at least a couple of classes. There are other locations for a few of the classes. Most classes are for a few weeks at a time and the cost is reasonable. There are classes for adults and children. There is a parent’s night out and classes at the Senior Center. This is a great way to learn about a subject without a lot of expense or long time contracts, in a safe environment, probably with some of your neighbors. What better way to meet others in your community. Take at look at the Bastrop ISD website to find out more information. Anyone can take advantage of these classes. I do not live in the district but I enjoy the convenience of driving to Cedar Creek or Bastrop rather than driving back to Austin. Cedar Creek Park is official. The first Bastrop County Park was officially dedicated on December 5th. This is the first county owned and operated park for Bastrop County. I and a few others had already begun using the trails and playgrounds for quite some time now. There is a nice concrete trail for walking, bike riding and skateboarding. There is also a nature trail, but the weeds had gotten a little high back in the summer and now it gets dark too early for me to use comfortably. There are fields for baseball and/or softball, looks like a field for soccer and maybe football too. I noticed a small covered pavilion, a few picnic tables scattered about and a playground area. There are also some port-a-pots, not great, but when kids gotta go, they gotta go. The Cedar Creek Park cost approximately $1 million dollars with funds received from a Texas Parks and Wildlife grant of $500,000 and contributions from Cedar Creek native and philanthropist James Voss. Bastrop ISD made the 44 acre park land available which is bordered by Cedar Creek Elementary and Cedar Creek itself. This is a great asset to an area that is already growing with more and more families. The park has been faced with plenty of controversy, skepticism and doubts since it was first proposed by a former Pct. 1 commissioner a decade ago. I for one am glad to see it officially opened and look forward to using it more. I love a bargain. So I am always looking for a thrift store or garage sale when I drive around Austin or the surrounding communities. Even when I travel out of Central Texas one of my favorite things to do is find a thrift store in whatever town I’m in. I had heard talk that there was going to be a Goodwill Store opening in Bastrop, so I have been watching. I just saw it Saturday afternoon. I did not have time to stop this time but I will on my next trip to Bastrop or maybe that will be my trip. This new Goodwill occupies roughly 11,000 square foot of space at its new location on HWY. 71 and FM 304 intersection. I have found great items at many Goodwill Stores and other second hand shops. They offer everything, clothing, jewelry, furniture, books and household items. Now they also have a computer store. Goodwill Industries is a great program for people helping people and with all of the talk about the cleaning up the environment WHAT BETTER WAY TO REDUCE,REUSE, AND RECYCLE? The city of Bastrop is no longer just a small town outside of Austin. It is growing , with more and more larger franchise stores and restaurants moving in. But even with all of the growth Bastrop still retains a small town atmosphere. Los Cielos was one of the first and one of the largest developments of single family homes in the Del Valle community. The neighborhood has added a considerable amount to the student population and the growth of the school district. Los Cielos is situated at the corner of Ross Road and Pearce Lane, located within close proximity to at least three of the schools in the Del Valle Independent School District. The high school, one of the two middle schools and one of the six elementary schools are on Pearce Lane. The neighborhood offers an assortment of home choices. There are smaller established homes with prices that appeal to a first time homebuyer or maybe you would like one of the new homes being offered. Los Cielos is a neighborhood that continues to grow and develop as more people realize the convenience of living in this area so close to Austin which provides shopping, restaurants and entertainment, yet with a country setting not far away. Southeast Metro Park, Moya Park and McKinney Falls State Park offer residents many outdoor activities to choose from. There multiple and various ball fields, natural trails for hiking, paved trails for bikes and skateboarding, camping, fishing, pavilions and picnic areas. Los Cielos is a neighborhood with a lot to offer. Del Valle is a community located to the Southeast of Austin and is usually known for the location of Austin-Bergstrom Intl. Airport. There is more to the community than meets the eye. |
