Volunteering in Austin and Central Texas

There are many charities from which to choose in Austin and the surrounding areas. Here is one that provides many services to working-poor families, one of which is basic education. I would like to introduce you to El Buen Samaritano. I have been a volunteer teacher at El Buen for 3 years now and have enjoyed it very much. I never dreamed I could stand in front of a group of adults and try to teach anything. I have no formal training and I speak no other language than English, but the students I teach seem to enjoy themselves and to learn English. Most of the students are Spanish speakers but I have met people from Korea, Japan, Ukraine, and many other places around the world. Some have a minimal English vocabulary, others want to expand on what they already know. Some are young adults, some are older. Some are college educated, most are not. They all have one thing in common. They want to learn English. I have come to appreciate the diversity, ability and dedication of people with a desire to learn.

Day and evening classes are offered. Volunteers are always needed. Give it try. You might be surprised at what a great teacher you can be. I know I was.
